Kitchen Cabinets are by and large the core of any kitchen. They can be highlighted by kitchen appliances such as the refrigerator, stove, cooktop, dishwasher and microwave, or these appliances can be modified to blend in by using panels that match your kitchen cabinets.

Shopping for kitchen cabinets can be intimidating, especially for a first time buyer. There are hundreds/thousands of major kitchen cabinet companies, and many more smaller custom kitchen cabinet shops where you can get any cabinet made from any species of wood that your mind can imagine. Add to that list the explosion of RTA Kitchen Cabinet importers, and the laminated cabinet manufacturers, and suddenly the list can be overwhelming. Not to mention the fact that higher price always means high quality in construction, or more features being available.

In the past, pricing had always been the way to categorize kitchen cabinets. Traditionally, tthe higher-quality cabinets simply cost more money. As I mentioned before, with more and more importers conforming to the KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association) building standards, some of the RTA Kitchen Cabinets or Stock kitchen cabinets can actually be a sturdier cabinet than the traditional, made to order cabinets. Regardless of what type of kitchen cabinet you decide to go with, it does not take much effort to spend tens of thousands of dollars on the actual kitchen cabinets.

Most kitchen cabinet manufacturers build their kitchen base and wall cabinets in standard sizes. The kitchen base cabinets are often 34.5 inches tall and 24 inches deep. They come in widths starting at 12 inches and can go up to 48 inches often in increasing width increments of 3 inches. Kitchen wall cabinets are often 12 inches deep and 30 inches or 42 inches tall. They also come in the same size widths as the base cabinets. Wall cabinets also come in several different heights and depths for locations such as over the refrigerator or over the microwave/hood range unit. With custom kitchen cabinets, you have even more choices available, since the kitchen cabinets will be created specifically for your kitchen space.

Different semi-custom kitchen cabinet manufacturers make different-sized kitchen cabinets for all sorts of special looks and situations. It is not uncommon to have one cabinet extend beyond adjacent cabinets to create a distinguished look. It pays to shop around to see all of the different possibilities and special cabinet features offered by the custom and semi-custom kitchen cabinet manufacturers.

One of the biggest advantages to true custom kitchen cabinets is the ability to make one giant base or wall kitchen cabinet instead of separate boxes that are screwed together by the installer at the jobsite. A custom-cabinet maker can easily make one giant base cabinet 8 feet long that installs as if it were a piece of furniture. The same is true for wall kitchen cabinets. The advantage of this method is the lack of vertical seams where two traditional cabinet boxes would mate up to one another.

Pay particular attention to the materials used to build the kitchen cabinets. Some kitchen cabinets are made with minimal-quality engineered lumber, particleboard, or fiberboard. . If you plan to load a wall cabinet with heavy traditional china, the weight of the dishes may cause the cabinet to pull apart over time. This is particularly true when it comes to the semi-custom cabinets that the name brand cabinet manufacturers sell at the big box stores (which is why price is not always an accurate gauge of cabinet quality). Many of the RTA Kitchen Cabinet manufacturers use solid plywood sides, which obviously creates a strong kitchen cabinet box than a particleboard or fiberboard box. When it comes to custom cabinets, the material choices are endless and can usually be specified by the customer.

Another factor that will determine the price of kitchen cabinets is the material used to hold it together. Custom kitchen cabinet manufacturers will often use a combination of dovetailed joints, wood biscuits, and glue to create tight joints. Mid-grade kitchen cabinets will have a wide range of materials holding them together (staples and nails on the lower end, to cam lock assembly and wood glue on the higher end). Most RTA Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers utilize the cam lock system, which creates a nice sturdy cabinet, and when enhanced with wood glue, can last a life time. Steer away from any kitchen cabinets that are using staples, wooden dowels, or just screws. The strength of the cabinet will be compromised at the joints with these weaker joining materials.

I have been remodeling houses for over 10 years, and have been able to weed out some of the kitchen cabinet choices that didn’t work for me. If you are interested in learning more about my personal preferences, check out my author bio.

When it come to setting up a well-equipped kitchen, it is often a good idea to start from the very beginning. You may have more kitchen stuff than you use regularly with lots of tools that are no longer up to the task or have been forgotten. If you’re in your first apartment or recently married, you’re probably already at the very beginning and need to start from scratch… Either way, what follows is an overview of the necessities with some important notes on considerations you should make as you browse the housewares department. Let’s take a look at the essential building blocks of truly functional kitchen workspace.

Cutting boards

You’ll need at least two cutting boards, one for meat and one for veggies. There are myriad types on the market and you should take stock of your available storage and lifestyle before choosing. There are beautiful, functional (and very expensive) butcher-block-type cutting boards you can buy, but remember these must be meticulously cared for to avoid the cultivation of dangerous germs and NEVER soaked in water. Larger versions can take up lots of counter and storage space, so keep these things in mind before making a big investment. Plastic and silicone versions are perfectly functional for average jobs and can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher, but don’t provide the surface area of the larger wooden boards.

Cookware

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the choices out there when it comes to cookware. It’s also very easy to spend your kids’ college money on pots if you’re not careful! Besides what you like the look of and what feels good in your hand, there are a few things to think about before choosing cookware. For instance, what kind of heat source does your stove-top utilize? Gas stoves work well with all kinds of cookware, but electric stoves can take longer to adjust the amount of heat being used, so you want to avoid cookware that is overly heavy, as this will delay heat adjustments even further. Finally, if you have an induction cooktop, make sure you acquaint yourself with the manufacturer’s recommendations as some cookware will not allow the magnetic currents responsible for heat. If you’re reassessing your current tools, inspect your non-stick pieces for scratches and other damage to the non-stick surfaces. Cookware with this damage should be replaced.

10″ inch skillet

8″ inch skillet

1 qt saucepan

3 qt saucepan

6 qt stock or soup pot

Roasting Pan

Bakeware

Another category with lots of choices, today’s bakeware includes some pieces that would leave our grandmothers stumped. some of the newest stuff–like flexible silicone muffin and loaf pans–can take some getting used to and aren’t necessarily good replacements for tried and true earthware, pyrex or metal pieces.

Shallow baking Pan and or “cookie” sheets (they are good for more than cookies!)

9 x 13 inch casserole

9 x 9 inch casserole

Knives

Skip the $800 knife set and get quality versions of the following essential blades to get your kitchen running:

8″ chef’s knife

Paring Knife

Bread Knife

Steak Knives (4-8)

Sundry Tools

Measuring Cups (dry)

Measuring Cup (wet)

Measuring Spoons

Graduated Mixing Bowls (set 3-5)

Strainer or colander

Can Opener

Pepper Grinder (If you’re not already, get in the fresh-ground pepper habit!)

Utensils

Whisk

Tongs (1-2)

Silicon Spatulas (2-3)

Wooden Spoons (2-3)

Large Spoon

Large Slotted Spoon

Vegetable Peeler

Cheese Grater

Wine opener

There are several ways in which we can save electricity and energy in the kitchen. One way is to see if we can reduce the cooking times. Another way is to see if a different appliance does the same job and yet uses less energy. Yet another way is to see if we can reduce wastage. Here are some tips.

1. Defrost food first before cooking it. You can do it in a fridge overnight or in a microwave if you want the defrosting done quickly.

2. Put a lid on the pan when you’re cooking. When a pan is covered, heat loss is reduced. That means you can set the stove on low to keep the content simmering. The cooking time will also be reduced.

3. Use a pressure cooker to cook foods. Since it operates at a higher pressure, water therefore boils at a higher temperature. The higher temperature of the water and steam causes the food to be cooked much faster, using less energy.

4. Don’t use a small pan on a large burner. Match the sizes of the pan and of the heating element.

5. Use flat-bottomed pans instead of warped-bottom ones, particularly when cooking on electric stove.

6. Stir fry meat and vegetables. It takes more time to chop up the meat, but the meat then cooks much quicker.

7. Use a kettle to boil water instead of using a stove top burner. Boil only the amount of water that is needed, whether it is for making tea or for cooking.

8. When baking in the oven, experiment to see if preheating time can be kept to a minimum or done away all together.

9. Try not to open the oven door to check on cooking progress as a lot of heat escapes otherwise. It can be helpful having an oven thermometer or an oven-safe meat thermometer.

10. Where possible, use a microwave oven. Microwaves uses a considerable amount of energy when in use but it more than makes up for it by the much reduced cooking times. It draws much less electricity than an electric oven for the same job.

11. Use a toaster oven to do small baking jobs instead of an oven. Using a toaster oven decreases the area to be heated and in so doing saves energy. Use it for things like baking potatoes, fish sticks, chicken nuggets etc.

12. Use a convection microwave that offers, within the same unit, microwave, convection oven and grill features. Some of these microwave ovens can cook food using both convection and microwave at the same time, providing crisp brown exteriors and retaining juiciness for meats and chickens.

13. Use a steamer for cooking meals like fish and vegetables. It cannot burn the food and has a relatively low power consumption.

14. Use a crock pot (slow cooker) instead of a stove top burner to cook soups and stews that typically take a long time. It will let these dishes simmer gently.

15. Use a thermal cooker for things like soups and stews. A thermal cooker has 2 parts: an inner pan and an outer container. The inner pan is used to bring foods to a boil on a stove. It is then placed inside the insulated outer container and sealed until cooked.

16. Use an induction cooker. It uses magnetic induction to transfer heat from the cooker to the pan on the surface. The cooktop surface also stays relatively cool while the food in the pan is cooking. Induction cookers have a very high energy efficiency, much higher than traditional stoves.

17. Use an electricity monitor to measure the electrical usage of various electrical appliances in the kitchen.

The last point is worth mentioning in a little more detail. Some electricity monitors not only measure the electricity consumption but also work out the actual cost. All you have to do is to input the electric rate found on the utility bill and the monitor does the calculation for you.

Using an electricity monitor, you can find out the usage costs of your kitchen electrical appliances and then come up with your own list of energy saving tips and ideas.
